ETF Market Notes: Trade Four ETFs for Free with Schwab

By David Penn | TradingMarkets.com | November 10, 2009

The exchange-traded funds (ETFs) offered by Schwab may not be unique in and of themselves â€" and you have to be a Schwab customer in order to get the commission-free trades â€" but for ETF traders of all varieties, the new initiative by the "Talk To Chuck" people at Schwab will be worth watching to see if others brokerages follow suit. The mere idea of commission-free ETF trading marks a potentially exciting new development in the ETF market.

The four new Schwab ETFs are very broad. Three are domestic equity based exchange-traded funds tracking the Dow Jones U.S. Broad Stock Market Index, the Schwab U.S. Broad Market Index ETF ( SCHB | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), the Dow Jones U.S. Large-Cap Total Stock Market Index in the form of the Schwab U.S. Large Cap Total Stock Market Index ETF ( SCHX | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and the Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Total Stock Market Index in the form of the Schwab U.S. Small Cap Total Stock Market Index ETF ( SCHA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating). The fourth ETF, the Schwab International Equity ETF ( SCHF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) is international in flavor, and tracks the FTSE Developed ex-US Index.

Schwab plans to release another set of ETFs in December including exchange-traded funds representing large-cap growth and value stocks, international small-cap and emerging markets.

For more information, visit Schwab's ETF center here.

The areas covered by the Schwab ETFs have long had exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for both ETF traders and investors to choose from. Here are a few non-Schwab ETFs for traders looking for alternatives in the broad stock market, U.S. large cap, small cap and international equity areas.
