The company noted that the second of the variants occurs only in tandem with the first, adding slight risk of the disease. However, these variants are so common that they are estimated to account for around 11% of breast cancers overall.
This discovery has elucidated the genetic factors underpinning a very significant proportion of inherited risk of ER+ breast cancer. The discovery was based on the analysis of genotypic data from a total of nearly 40 thousand patients and control subjects from five countries.
