The Helicos Genetic Analysis System incorporates the HeliScope Single Molecule Sequencer, the HeliScope Analysis Engine, and the HeliScope Sample Loader, all designed for production-level genetic analysis.
The Single Molecule Sequencer is reportedly able to image billions of bases in a single run, while the Analysis Engine provides real-time image processing, resulting in the continuous processing of samples meeting the requirements of large, complex experiments.
According to Helicos, its proprietary True Single Molecule Sequencing, tSMS, technology allows direct measurement of billions of strands of DNA, enabling scientists to perform experiments which were not previously possible. It claimed the tSMS technology directly sequences single molecules of DNA or RNA, a process which increases the speed of sequencing substantially, while also decreasing the cost.
