The press was allowed to visit the site, where the company plans to bore a 3km tunnel horizontally into the Japan Alps. Another tunnel of about the same length is to be dug in Nagano Prefecture on the other side of the mountain range starting next month.
The railway operator had conducted various geographical and geological surveys in and around Tokyo and Nagoya, but this is its first time for it to dig horizontally in preparation for tunnel construction. It plans to draw up a survey report by year-end at the earliest.
JR Tokai estimates that the 290km trip between Tokyo and Nagoya on the maglev shinkansen, which is expected to move at speeds of up to 500kph, would take just 40-50 minutes.
