China Unicom to invest 20 bln yuan in GSM upgrade

BEIJING, Mar 7, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- CHU | news | PowerRating | PR Charts -- Chinese mobile service operator China Unicom (0762.HK; CHU.NYSE) will invest no less than 20 billion yuan to upgrade its GSM network in 2008, said Chang Xiaobing, the company' s chairman.

Chang says the pending reshuffle of China's telecom industry will not influence China Unicom's investment scheme. And the company will maintain the investment policy to make decisions according to its business requirement.

In response to recent rumor on refinance, Chang restated that the company will not consider that before China restructures its telecom industry and issues 3G licenses.
