At lunch time, firefighters were called to the cul-de-sac on Byerly Drive because crews from Quanta Services accidentally nicked a gas line while installing fiber optic cables.
Firefighter Ricky Davis of Wilson Fire and Rescue Services said firefighters responded in under a minute to the scene.
"We had the gas shut off and residents back in their homes within 15 minutes," he said.
Micah Motes, a supervisor with Quanta Services, said his workers followed the proper protocol.
"These guys do a great job for us," he said. "Unfortunately, sometimes this happens even though we are very careful. It was just an accident."
Motes said his workers began knocking on doors to evacuate residents as soon as the leak was detected.
"We did that as a precautionary measure," he said. "I want to say that Wilson Utilities and the Fire Department responded quickly."
After officials shut off the gas and there was not immediate danger, the residents were allowed back into their homes.
No one was hurt in the incident.
