Following the heels of Youdao.com, Internet giant Yahoo also comes up with the upgraded version of its desktop translation product Happy Translation.
As for Kingsoft, the time-honored electronic dictionary developer in China, launches online dictionary iCiba at www.iciba.com, which is free for download.
These newly launched dictionaries are all focusing on translation and lookup of Chinese buzzwords, providing big convenience to college students, translators, and white collars.
They are capable of searching the Web and picking up the most frequently used words as final result based on search engines provided by Internet search service providers.
The online and desktop buzzwords dictionaries have received so far robust ovations from Chinese users for their convenience and fast upgrading.
Kingsoft's iCiba is a complement to its traditional desktop dictionary software by specializing in lookup and translation of latest Chinese buzzwords, says an executive from Kingsoft.
Kingsoft has been adopting charging policies since its inception, but now it is leaning to free products by following the trend.
Industry analysts point out that Kingsoft's free policy will trigger a sweeping regroup and reshuffle in China's desktop e-dictionary software industry.
With a vast user pool, Kingsoft is more likely to win the war. As for other new comers, they have to face the strong fire power of Kingsoft.
Chinese users have got used to online or desktop dictionaries to do their translation or surf the international websites, triggering a huge market of dictionary software or online platform.
As the number of Chinese Internet users is skyrocketing and the country is building a broadband network around the country, the online and desktop dictionary software market has huge room for expansion in the future, industry experts say.
Kingsoft was founded in 1998. Its products have been widely used in more than 50 million PCs around the world. In August 1998, Lenovo Group, China's biggest IT vendor, became a shareholder of Kingsoft. With the help of Lenovo, Kingsoft has been in the fast track of growing. In 2002, Kingsoft gained the CMM2 certification and ISO9001 certification.
In early 2003, Kingsoft set up two new departments of industry application and Digital Entertainment. It now has five segments plus previous sectors of WPS, Anti-virus Software, and E-dictionary.
