Applicants want to add 32 taxis
More than 30 new taxis could hit the streets of Myrtle Beach if a city panel grants all the requests before it today.
A five-member city panel will hear from 10 applicants requesting a total of 32 additional licenses at 1 p.m. in the City Services Building.
In previous years, people requesting new licenses, called Certificates of Convenience and Necessity, had to go before the City Council. Last year, the council handed over the power to a panel, though appeals still go before the council.
Myrtle Beach licenses 184 taxi drivers. The city regulates taxi fares, vehicle cleanliness and insurance, among other things.

Company founder to receive state award
Deborah Moore, founder and CEO of the Myrtle Beach company AccuStat EMR, has been named the state's Small Business Person of the Year.
Moore got the award from the Small Business Administration for her electronic medical records consultation company.
Moore started her business offering medical transcription services in the Myrtle Beach area from her home in 2002, after 13 years in the nursing field.
The business has since expanded to a 2,400-square-foot office and now employs 14 people and about 1,000 independent contractors.
Clients include hospitals, legal offices and medical associations across the nation.
AccuStat has partnered with Protect.org to develop Sarina's Friends, a nonprofit fund to help parents of sexually abused children in the southeast get money for legal fees. It has also partnered with S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation to train disabled and unemployed individuals in transcription and information technology.
Moore was nominated by Sarah Young, a business development counselor with the S.C. Women's Business Center, a resource partner of the SBA.
Moore will be honored at the small-business awards ceremony, part of the Salute to Small Business, on Tuesday at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.
