HANOI, Apr 11, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- -- Vietnam will pour 17 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (nearly 1.1 billion U.S. dollars) into building and upgrading hospitals in districts nationwide from 2008 to 2010, the newspaper Young People reported on Friday.

Under a national plan on developing district-level hospitals recently approved by the government, Vietnam will upgrade existing hospitals and build more healthcare facilities with 30-450 beds each in districts.

Of the capital, 14 trillion VND (876 million dollars) will come from government bonds, 2.2 trillion VND (137.5 million dollars) from budgets of localities, and some 800 billion VND (50 million dollars) from other sources.

Vietnam plans to have 1,200 hospitals and medical institutes with a total of 190,000 beds by 2010, and 1,300 such establishments with 250,000 beds by 2020. Under another plan on developing medical check-up and treatment networks nationwide by 2020 recently approved by the government, the country targets at least 20.5 hospital beds per 10,000 residents by 2010, and at least 25 beds by 2020.
