SHENZHEN, Apr 16, 2008 (SinoCast China IT Watch via COMTEX) -- BIDU | news | PowerRating | PR Charts -- Kai-fu Lee, president of Google China, says that Google China is set to top China's Internet search market in the coming five years.

Chinese Internet users are making fun of the ambitious plan of the world's number one search service provider, because they think that Google China can not outdo Baidu.com, the bellwether of China's Internet search market.

As part of its long-term strategy, Google China is doing everything in its power to tap into the social networking and mobile Internet sectors in China by investing in Chinese start- ups. With China's Internet booming, it is expected that the number of the country's netizens has outpaced that of the U.S.

Kai-fu Lee says that Google China so far has surpassed Yahoo China, an Alibaba company, but it is still legged far behind Baidu.com in terms of market shares.

Internet search sales of Google China accounted for 26% of China's Internet search market in the fourth quarter of 2007, in contrast to 17% in the same period in 2006. Baidu.com increased its market shares to 60% from 58% during the period.

Baidu.com is the favorite of Chinese Internet lovers, especially young people, for they can get fee music downloaded from the website.

Google has by far invested in Chinese social networking website Tianya.cn and video and game downloading website Xunlei Network Technology. However, Google has not disclosed the investment volume.

What is more, Google China is in talks with Salesforce.com in an effort to boost its online software sales in this country.

Lately Comsenz Technology Inc. announces that it has completed the second round of fundraising from Google.

On March 25, Google released in a filing submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, that USD 1 million has been injected into the Chinese online social networking technology services provider.

Comsenz has a series of open social networking platform centered on UCenter, including Discuz!, a bulletin board system, SupeSite, a content management system, and ECShop, an open source B2C and C2C system. It is also operating online services like 5d6d.

After seven years of development, Comsenz has grown to the largest community platform and services provider in the country. By March 2008, its community platform has covered more than 560,000 independent websites. Discuz! has become an application standard for China's Internet community websites.

Comsenz plans to use Google's search engine in its products, and post Google's AdSense ads on its websites.

Insiders believe that Google intends to extend reach through communities, and set up more diversified user base.
