Maddox recently launched a program that will help provide a free cell phone for county residents to use in the case of an emergency. The Henry County Sheriff's Office has started collecting old cell phones, which will be sent to the National Sheriff's Association. Officials at the National Sheriff's Association will send the phones to a non-profit 911 cell phone bank, where they will be reprogrammed to only dial 911.
"It's not going to be a cell phone they can use for personal calls," Maddox said. "It will be emergency calls only. It will be like their personal lifeline."
Maddox said the number of phones given away to residents will be determined by the number of phones donated to the Henry County Sheriff's Office. People eligible to receive the phones have to suffer from a "serious medical condition" or be an older person, Maddox said.
"It's for the elderly living alone, or elderly that has some type of health problem," Maddox said. "If you're 50 and had a serious medical condition then you could get one.
"It's another way of serving by giving them a lifeline to call if something happens then we can respond and help with the emergency," Maddox said.
