HANOI, Apr 23, 2008 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- -- Highlights of today's newspapers:

NHAN DAN:

- Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh and State President Nguyen Minh Triet met with the National Assembly speaker from the Republic of Korea.

- The 8 th session of the Vietnamese National Assembly Standing Committee discussed measures to curb inflation, reducing price hikes

SAIGON GIAI PHONG:

- Stock prices went down, transactions gradually dropped.

LAO DONG:

- Is the move to raise tax on import cars to 83 per cent a way to protect local manufacturers.

THOI BAO KINH TE VIETNAM:

- Commercial banks report a drop in the volume of savings deposits. Recently, especially between mid February and now, commercial banks have faced a slow increase and even decrease in the volume of savings deposits despite of their efforts to raise savings interest rates and boost promotional activities.

- Ba Ria-Vung Tau province a bright spot in attracting foreign direct investment. According to the Ministry of Planning and Investments Foreign Investment Department, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province ranks second, after Ho Chi Minh City , in attracting FDI. More than US$5.4 billion in FDI has been poured into the country in the first quarter of this year, up 31 per cent from the same period last year.

- Binh Duong province develops key industries. Priorities are given to the supporting industries and human resources training.

VIETNAM NEWS:

- Facing urbanisation, many farmers living in Ho Chi Minh City's rural districts like Cu Chi and Nha Be find it hard to continue farming. In Cu Chi alone, by 2020 more than 5,000 hectares of the farmland will be converted to build industrial zones and tourist sites.

TIN TUC:

- HanViet Foundation, a South Korean NGO, is offering scholarship worth US$250 to third and fourth year students at Vietnamese universities.
