First, there was the decorated house. Then, the poker tournament. And, of course, dozens of requests to businesses and individuals.
And the money rolled in for David Mack. To be exact, $15,754.38.
Mack was crowned Mr. Hudson's Bay on April 12. He was named the winner at the mock beauty contest by raising the most money for Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland.
The 12 contestants in the Mr. Hudson's Bay Pageant raised $85,329 this year. It was a six-month effort.
Since its inception in 1994, the Bay pageant has raised an estimated $653,000 for the hospital. The effort is so well known that a wing of the hospital is named after the school.
The Doernbecher program is called "Kids Making Miracles."
"It was just an amazing experience for me," said Mack, who will attend Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., this fall. "I got to meet a lot of people in the community.
"As for the trip to the hospital, it really went to my heart. Seeing the kids, it gave me a lot of inspiration."
Mack and his dad, Joe, spelled Doernbecher in holiday lights on their home's roof in December. That brought in $1,700 in donations. The poker party brought in another $1,700. His biggest single contributor gave $1,000.
"I appreciate everyone who supported me and helped change children's lives," Mack said.
First runner-up in the pageant was Bryan Schwartz, with $12,294.66 raised. Second runner-up, with $7,007.58, was Randyn Stutesman.
Other contestants: John Paul Dally, Bill Duong, Brad Fresch, Ryan Greenfield, Bret Henderson, Jake Hockett, David Kussman, Anders Manley and Dakota Rhodes. The coordinators were senior girls Kelsey Hudson, Lauren McCammon and Bre Miller as well as junior girls Kelly Anderson and Courtney Beck.
