WINNIPEG, MB, Apr 28, 2008 (Resource News International via COMTEX) -- -- Canadian grain and oilseed production in the 2008/09 (Aug/Jly) crop year will be higher than the 2007/08 level, but has been reduced from a forecast made in early March, according to updated supply/demand balance sheets from the market analysis division of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada dated April 25 but released on April 28.

Revisions to the supply/demand tables were attributed to the 2008 acreage projections for Canada released by Statistics Canada on April 21.

Production of the eight major grains and oilseeds in 2008/09 was forecast at 63.505 million metric tons. This was down from the 64.760 million tons projected on March 6 and compares with the 2007/08 level of 59.958 million.

The eight major grains and oilseeds include: canola, flaxseed, soybeans, wheat, oats, barley, corn and rye.

Total exports for 2008/09 of the eight major grains and oilseeds were pegged at 29.725 million metric tons, down slightly from the March projection of 30.100 million but above expectations for 2007/08 of 29.000 million.

Total domestic usage of the grains and oilseeds for the 2008/09 crop year were estimated at 36.986 million metric tons, which would be down from the March forecast of 37.770 million. Domestic usage in 2007/08 was expected to hit 37.165 million tons.

Ending stocks of the eight major grains and oilseeds in 2008/09 were pegged at 9.375 million metric tons. This was down from the March projection of 9.870 million tons and compares with the 2007/08 forecast of 9.695 million.

April 25 estimates for Canadian 2008/09 (Aug/Jly) and 2007/08 grain and oilseed supply and demand. Domestic usage numbers include food and industrial use as well as feed, waste, and dockage. In million metric tonnes. Source: Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
