VIETNAMESE NEWSPAPER HIGHLIGHTS - MAY 5, 2008

HANOI, May 05, 2008 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- -- Highlights of today's newspapers:

NHAN DAN:

- Karl Marx's 190th birthday (May 5) marked: Marxism and the victorious development of Vietnam's revolution.

- Launching a project to increase and improve border markers between Vietnam and Laos.

VNA NET:

- The Vietnam Superintendence and Inspection Co (Vinacontrol) has announced a net revenue of VND25.2 billion (U$1.57 million) in the first quarter of this year, a year-on-year rise of 43.7 per cent.

- The Military Bank's profits for the first quarter of the year have reached VND240 billion (US$15 million), 31.2 per cent of its target for the year. By the end of March, the banks deposits totalled more than VND23.21 trillion ($1.45 billion) while outstanding loans reached VND13.1 trillion ($813.44 million).

THOI BAO NGAN HANG:

- According to the country's commitments to the WTO, the Vietnamese State is able to grant subsidy equal to 10 per cent of its agriculture output value. In fact, it has to date given only 3-5 per cent or US$260 million per year to agriculture.

THOI BAO KINH TE VIETNAM:

- Gold price continues to go down though it is still higher than that in the world. The gold price slipped to below VND17.8 million per tael on the last days of April and early May from the mark of VND18 million.

- Vietnam Asset Management Ltd (VAM) will continue investing in the stock market in Vietnam , said VAM Director General Nguyen Xuan Minh.

- Upbeat signals in national economy: priority continues to be given to curbing inflation. Socio-economic performance in the first four months showed positive changes, with optimistic signals coming from industry, exports, and consumer price index.

DAU TU:

- Inflation and peoples life. When prices of food and foodstuff soared 1.5 times, impacts of inflation on poor people are clearer.

HANOI MOI:

- Ha Long Bay welcomed a record number of tourists. More than 10,000 holiday-makers visited the world heritage site each day during the two-day vacation on April 30 and May 1, 80 percent of them were foreign visitors.
