ALL DAILIES:
- The 12th National Assembly begins its third session with the Government scheduled to table a report on the socio-economic situation and a proposal for lowering growth targets.
- Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on May 5 approved a 2010 plan and a 2050 vision to expand Hanoi area by 13 times its current size and making it a major metropolis in the region. Under the plan, Hanoi area will cover the current capital city and seven other provinces. The population of the whole area is expected to grow to 18 million by 2050 with an urban population of 4.1-4.5 million by 2010, 8.1-9.2 million by 2020, and 14-14.5 million by 2050.

- Products of Ho Chi Minh City-based Vinh Hoan Seafood Co. was selected one of the best new products at the 2008 European Seafood Exhibition in Belgium.
- A training workshop to combat money laundering was jointly opened in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang on May 5 by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Ministry of Public Security.
VIETNAM NEWS:
- Standard & Poors has lowered Vietnams credit rating from stable to negative, reflecting doubts in the global community about the countrys capacity to cool down its overheated economy.
- Vietnam and Laos have agreed to boost information exchange and experiences sharing regarding State organisation, administrative reform and the work of civil servants and local authorities. The agreement was reached between the Vietnamese Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) and the Lao General Department of Administration and Civil Servant Management during a current visit to Laos by a MoHA delegation.
TIN TUC:
- The Vietnamese Government has issued a decree regulating the organisation and operation of tissue banks and the national centre for organ transplants.
- President of Ibaraki prefectures Japan-Vietnam Friendship Society, Shimo Yamada, described the Vietnam Festival as a significant contribution to recent fine developments of relations between the two nations. The festival, launched in the Japanese prefecture on May 3, is part of celebrations for the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 40th anniversary of the Friendship Alliance between Japan and Vietnam.
KHOA HOC & CONG NGHE:
- Vietnam has entered negotiations for a position in orbit for its second satellite, Vinasat-2, which is slated to launch in the next seven to eight years.
- Vietnamese Government has earmarked US$43.7 million to support people living just above the poverty line. Under the plan, about 16 million people across the country will receive at least 50 per cent in subsidies to help cover health insurance cards, each worth US$8 per head per year.
