Currently, Baidu's search services in Japan consist of Web search, image search, video search, and blog search. The image search has functions like continuous display. Users can search for cartoon Web sites on Baidu.jp, too. As to MP3 music search, Baidu has no specific plans, saying it all depends on market environment.
On May 3, Microsoft Corporation announced that it gave up an acquisition of Yahoo Inc. The latter keeps its leading presence in the Japanese market, competing with Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG).
In the country's network retrieval market, there are also Goo, a leading search portal under control of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), Lotte Group's Infoseek, and small and medium sites like Livedoor.com.
Baidu forayed into Japan in January, and has been growing fast in the new market. Insiders guess that its presence is to tighten the competition, and lead to restructuring of small and medium sites in the country.
