(By Philip Holmes) Another rumor of a big IT marriage and falling oil prices helped stocks end Monday on an up note. HPQ is ready to buy Plano, Texas-based Electronic Data Systems for between $12 and $13 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. We might hear the final terms from the principals as early as today. Oil prices dropped on Monday, with news that China's oil imports dropped in April helping with this development. So did a report showing India's industrial production lower than at any time in six years. Perhaps we're seeing a global trend forming, as a slowing economy and high prices have a negative impact on demand. That would please, "stop talking about an oil bubble!" Paul Krugman at the NY Times, at least. Lower oil helped transportation stocks, as you would expect. But there was even happy news from a retailer on Monday: AnnTaylor Stores posted a better-than-expected 45 to 47 cents per share earnings forecast, citing strong results from its LOFT brand and cost controls. It also looks as if Long Island's Newsday will have a new owner. Cablevision Systems inked a $650 million deal with Tribune Co. to buy the paper. Cablevision was the hometown favorite to win the deal, but we'll see how popular they are around LawnGuyland once the cost-cutting resumes in earnest at Newsday. Analysts claim the cable operator will have a heck of a time turning a profit.
