May 16, 2008 (Bangor Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ZZGCX | news | PowerRating | PR Charts -- With rowdy employee cheers and a large audience of customers and local Boy Scouts, the new Home Depot celebrated its grand opening on Thursday afternoon.

The store, located at 650 Stillwater Ave. behind Chili's and Circuit City, opened to the public Tuesday. It is a bigger, freshly stocked version of the original Home Depot at 164 Longview Drive, which is expected to remain open until May 25.

"I want to thank the customers who for the last 10 years have supported us at our other store," said Dale Gass, Maine district manager for the Vinings, Ga.-based company. "We look forward to serving you for many more years."

Store manager Ron Coombs assisted Rod McKay, the city's economic development director, and Peter Arno, Bangor's deputy police chief, in a board-sawing -- rather than ribbon-cutting -- ceremony. The store then presented two checks of $1,000 each to Bangor Cub Scout Pack 6 and Winterport Boy Scout Troop 234 as a community service gesture.

Home Depot CEO Frank Blake toured the new store before the grand opening but left before the festivities began. He declined to comment on the occasion.

The new Bangor store spans 115,000 square feet with a large outside garden area and an indoor space for tropical plants. It boasts updated appliance, bath, hardware, lighting and storage displays. The store also features a larger paint-sample center, installation services, a professional contractor desk and a tool rental center.

The store will continue to provide free clinics and product demonstrations. All signs in the store are written in English and Spanish.

More than 250 full- and part-time employees work at the new Home Depot and the store is accepting applications for part-time positions, Coombs said. To apply, visit www.homedepot.com/careers.

All the inventory in the newly constructed store is new and the original store is having a major sale. The original store's hours are 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday.

The new store's hours are 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.
