Jun 30, 2008 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- VSH | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Stocks in the News: PureSpectrum, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: PSPM), Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH), RF Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMD), FLIR Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: FLIR)

Jun 26, 2008 -- PureSpectrum, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: PSPM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) was recently awarded a full patent for a high frequency, high efficiency electronic ballast with a sine wave oscillator that further strengthens the company's patent portfolio. The issuance of the patent is the latest demonstration of PureSpectrum's ongoing effort to reinforce corporate organization and infrastructure as the company prepares for expanded operations. PureSpectrum owns the rights to a family of patents and patent applications related to electronic ballast technology engineered to address both manufacturability and functionality. During the first two quarters of 2008 the company has been engaged in licensing discussions with multiple major lighting manufacturers regarding proprietary dimmable ballast circuitry for Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs, linear fluorescent lamps as well as a proprietary design for a dimming device. Patent 7,388,334 is one of multiple circuitry technologies identified by PureSpectrum which provide a diverse range of performance benefits for fluorescent lighting. The patent describes a high efficiency electronic ballast that is addressable to all gas discharge lighting applications. As the company focuses on marketing the most recent iterations of its technology, PureSpectrum president and CEO Lee Vanatta said it is critical for the company to continue diligently protecting the base science which was the foundation for the company's technology breakthroughs. The issuance of patents also further strengthens PureSpectrum's position in ongoing licensing discussions with lighting manufacturers. "We are firmly committed to protecting all aspects of PureSpectrum's intellectual property to ensure the most possible avenues for revenue generation and guarantee our shareholders that this company is thoroughly prepared for rapid growth," Vanatta said. "This patent represents our advance technology team's initial discoveries in properly controlling wave forms within the ballast to reduce the heat and energy losses in order to direct more power to the generation of light."

Jun 27, 2008 -- New resistor products released this month by Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) include the hermetically sealed VHP203 miniature ultra-high-precision Z-Foil resistor and the CSM2512S high-precision Bulk Metal surface-mount Power Metal Strip resistor. The device's hermetic sealing eliminates the ingress of moisture and oxygen, while the oil acts as a thermal conductor, thus eliminating the long-term degradation experienced by elements in unsealed resistors, while at the same time allowing the device to accept short periods of overload without degradation. The new resistor is built on Vishay's "Z-Foil" technology, which provides a significant reduction of the resistive component's sensitivity to ambient temperature variations (TCR) and applied power changes (PCR). Z-Foil improves stability by an order of magnitude compared to any other resistor technology, allowing designers to guarantee a high degree of accuracy in fixed-resistor applications. With accuracy of +/- 0.001 % and long-term shelf life of 2 ppm for at least 10 years, the new device is optimized for high-precision instrumentation amplifiers, bridge networks, and differential amplifiers in high-accuracy products where humidity resistance and high stability are required. Typical end products include laboratory, metrology, measurement, medical, and test equipment.

Jun 27, 2008 -- RF Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMD), a global leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance semiconductor components, today announced the release of the CXE-1089Z GaAs pHEMT LNA for use in cable set-top box and digital television (DTV) applications. The CXE-1089Z is optimized for both low noise figure and low current consumption in order to best satisfy the increasing performance requirements of next-generation, higher-bandwidth devices. The CXE-1089Z features RFMD's patented active bias circuitry, which stabilizes bias current across changes in threshold voltage related to temperature and process variation, thereby reducing current consumption. The GaAs pHEMT LNA also utilizes a Darlington configuration with an optional external bias control, which further reduces current consumption -- and lowers the thermal profile of the end product -- while maintaining linear RF performance optimized for each application. "Unlike competing devices focused on a single performance parameter, the CXE-1089Z delivers a optimized blend of low noise figure, low multi-carrier distortion and low current consumption," said Alastair Upton, general manager of RFMD's Broadband and Consumer Business Unit. "This unique blend of performance combined with our ability to deliver a broad portfolio of CATV products were key elements to RFMD's recent design win at a leading set-top box and tuner module OEM with the CXE-1089Z."

Jun 27, 2008 -- FLIR Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: FLIR | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) announced today it has received a $6.7 million order from the Colombian Ministry of Defense for its Star SAFIRE HD(TM) stabilized, multi-sensor surveillance systems. The units delivered under this order will be installed on fixed-wing surveillance platforms for use in counter-narcotic and counter-terror missions within the Republic of Colombia. Since 2001, FLIR has delivered more than 70 airborne sensor systems to the Colombian Ministry of Defense while developing and maintaining an active and fully equipped service and completion center in Bogot. The recently expanded capabilities of this center provide support for all regional users of FLIR's thermal imaging equipment. Work will be performed at FLIR's facility in Portland, Oregon. Deliveries are expected to be completed within the next twelve months. "This contract, demonstrating the strong international appeal of our systems, leverages our investment in best-in-class technology and a global support infrastructure," said Earl R. Lewis, President and CEO of FLIR Systems, Inc. "We are pleased the Colombian Ministry of Defense has chosen FLIR products for this critical mission."

Market Wrap for June 27th, 2008

Friday's record oil prices fed the dour mood on Wall Street and cast a shadow on positive consumer spending data. In turn, the major indices each closed lower, extending the week's losses. Week-to-date, the S&P 500 lost 2.9%, the Dow Jones Industrials Average lost 4.1%, and the Nasdaq fell 3.8%. Crude prices rallied all the way to $142.99 per barrel to set a new all-time intraday high. In the end, prices eased as oil closed slightly higher at $140.25 per barrel on the Nymex. Crude prices are up more than 45% year-to-date. Financials finished the session as the worst performing sector. The sector closed 1.3% lower, as every one of its industry components finished lower, except insurance brokers (+1.9%). For the week, financials lost 6.5%. Merrill Lynch (MER 32.70, -0.35) grabbed its share of attention as reports indicated the firm may incur additional write-downs and may sell its stake in BlackRock (BLK 177.64, -3.06). Speculation of write-downs had limited affect on shares of MER, given that Goldman Sachs made the same inference yesterday. According to Financial Times, InBev is making a hostile bid for Anheuser-Busch (BUD 62.26, +0.91) after Anheuser-Busch rejected the Belgian brewer's offer for being inadequate and contrary to shareholders' best interest. The day's primary economic release was largely overlooked. Real personal consumption expenditures (PCE) data for May were up 0.4%. April was revised upward to a 0.2% increase. In turn, the second quarter average of April and May data 0.5% above the first quarter average, which is already a 2% annual rate of growth. Since another gain is likely in June, due to spending resulting from the fiscal stimulus, this puts real PCE on track to post a 2.5% annual rate of growth in the second quarter. Recall, PCE represents approximately 70% of GDP. The University of Michigan's final consumer confidence survey for June came in at 56.4, which is a bit below expectations and last month's reading. The June reading marks a new multiyear low.
