SMIC 12-inch chip project to come into operation in July

BEIJING, Jul 07, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- SMI | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The 12-inch chip project of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) (SMI. NYSE; 0981.HK) in the Optics Valley of China, a high-tech development zone in central China's Wuhan City, will officially start production in July, a local media quoted an official of the Optics Valley as saying.

The project was put into trial operation on April 25 and the qualified rate of the first batch of products subject to initial inspection on June 4 reached 78.5 percent, with the highest rate hitting 92.6 percent, which goes in line with the world's leading level.

The 12-inch chip project was kicked off in June 2007.
