The financial support is an extension of a USD 16 billion Chinese investment plan announced by Cisco at the end of 2007.
John Chambers, board chairman and CEO of the networking equipment supplier, revealed the news during his visit to China, when he investigated into the earthquake damage.
After the earthquake, a special team set up by Cisco has been discussing with the local government over possible ways to help the latter's rebuilding. Cisco, teaming up with other companies, and non-governmental organizations (NGO), determined the fields the financial aid is to be put, namely, education and medical treatment. They will together support Sichuan's rebuilding and redevelopment on the strength of Cisco's synergetic network solutions, professional technologies, and rich resources.
Previously, Cisco announced that its headquarters, staff, and Cisco Foundation would donate more than USD 2.5 million to the area struck by the earthquake.
