"It's part of raising the game and listening to every expert on the food safety front," said Teresa Paulsen, ConAgra spokeswoman.
Bill Marler of Marler Clark in Seattle said he has spoken to corporations before and planned to talk about fostering a culture that focuses on food safety while remaining profitable in a competitive industry.
"Paying attention to food safety is ultimately good for the bottom line and good for your company morally," Marler said.
The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that food poisoning causes about 76 million illnesses each year, with 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths.
Too often, Marler said, companies either ignore or do not recognize warning signs of food borne illness.
Marler's cases have included lawsuits against ConAgra, which recalled its Banquet chicken pot pies and Peter Pan peanut butter last year after they were linked to salmonella illnesses.
Marler credited ConAgra Chief Executive Gary Rodkin and other company executives for inviting him to speak.
"It says a lot for the company," Marler said.
He said he would speak to a food safety council of outside experts that ConAgra set up after the Peter Pan recall to help guide company policy and research. Paulsen said about 50 ConAgra food safety and quality experts also would attend the session.
Also invited to speak were Doug Powell, an associate professor of food safety at Kansas State University and founder of the online International Food Safety Network; and Barbara Kowalcyk, director of food safety and co-founder of the Center for FoodBorne Illness Research and Prevention.
In 2001, Kowalcyk's 2-year-old son, Kevin, died of complications due to an E. coli infection.
