The Payless Shoe Source, also near Sears, opened Friday and debuts the new "Hot Zone" concept for the Ocala and Gainesville area. Escape Nail Spa will open in August near Sears. News & More, a locally owned store, opened June 1 near J.C. Penney.
The Hot Zone concept groups shoes by style, instead of by size like at traditional Payless stores. It also has more accessories such as belts, sunglasses and watches, according to a news release.
Sara Elliott, a Paddock Mall representative, said the Payless concept store had a lot of business over its first weekend. Before it opened, customers who saw the barricades in front of the store frequently asked when it was coming.
"We're really happy to have Payless here," she said. "We've had a lot of interest."
Escape Nail Spa will offer manicures, pedicures and gel and acrylic nails, according to the release.
It has a sister store in Gainesville.
News & More is a newsstand that also sells coffee and prepackaged food, and shares an owner with the variety store As Seen On TV, which is located next to it.
Raj Badal, the owner, said he knew the tepid economy makes it a daring time to open a new business, but he wanted the space next to his existing store and did not want somebody else to fill it.
It has been a slow start, but he is confident that News & More fills a needed niche. People often came into As Seen On TV to ask where to buy a newspaper.
He also said he likes being located in a main shopping area.
"Everybody goes to the mall," Badal said. "You don't have to cross the street or cross the parking lot to go to another store."
The Paddock Mall is undergoing renovation. It is scheduled to be complete for the 2008 holiday season.
Nancy Glasgow, the vice president and account supervisor of Bitner/Hennessy Public Relations, which handles the Paddock Mall's public information, said in an email the mall is glad to have new businesses whenever they open.
"The mall is always looking to add new stores that answer a need for shoppers and these new stores address a wide range of goods and services, from manicures and pedicures, to shoes and accessories, to convenience items and newspapers," she said in the email.
