Operating profit for the three-month period decreased by 38% from EUR2.36bn, while net sales increased by 4% from EUR13.6bn, as compared to the corresponding period in 2007. Operating profit in the second quarter was affected by the negative impact of special items. Last year special items had a net positive impanct on operating profit.
Diluted earnings per share (EPS), excluding special items, increased to EUR0.36 from EUR0.32 year ago.
Devices & Services division reported net sales of EUR9.1bn, down 1% year on year and down 2% sequentially. Nokia Siemens Networks reported net sales of EUR4.1bn, up 18% year on year and up 20% sequentially.
Nokia's net sales in January-June 2008 increased 15% to EUR25.8bn from year ago. Reported operating profit decreased to EUR 3.0bn from EUR3.6bn.
Nokia said that estimated industry mobile device volumes were 303 million units, up 15% year on year and up 3% sequentially. Nokia's own mobile device volumes were 122 million units, up 21% year on year and up 6% sequentially.
Nokia estimated its mobile device market share at 40%, up from 38% in the second quarter 2007 and up from 39% sequentially.
Nokia expects industry mobile device volumes in the third quarter 2008 to be up sequentially. Nokia expects its mobile device market share in the third quarter 2008 to be approximately at the same level sequentially.
Nokia now expects industry mobile device volumes in 2008 to grow 10% or more from the approximately 1.14 billion units Nokia estimated for 2007.
Nokia, headquartered in Espoo, Finland, is a global mobile phone and network equipment manufacturer. The group has 112,300 employees worldwide and reported sales of over EUR51bn in 2007.
