The two groups, which market brands such as Alli for weight loss and Nicoderm and Nicorette for smoking cessation, will "be managed under the single umbrella of a new unit that we will call behavioral sciences," company spokeswoman Malesia Dunn said.
Dunn said GlaxoSmithKline's related research-and-development groups are already located in Parsippany.
It's unclear how many jobs will be affected in Moon, though nine Moon-based directors were already laid off earlier this week. Remaining job cuts will be made in phases throughout the summer, Dunn said, with an as-yet-undetermined number of the Moon employees being offered jobs in Parsippany or in other areas of the company.
GlaxoSmithKline currently employs around 500 in Moon.
Dunn said other functions will remain in Moon, including marketing units for the company's oral-care and general over-the-counter brands. The former unit markets products such as Aquafresh, Sensodyne, Polident and Poligrip, while the latter's brands include Tums, Abreva and Citrucel.
Dunn said the moves taking place this summer aren't a precursor to a complete Moon pullout.
"Our U.S. business for consumer health is undergoing a reorganization to better position us for future growth ... But we're not in jeopardy of leaving Moon. We've been here for 30 years," Dunn said.
