Built at Mitsubishi's factory in Thailand, the Pajero Sport is based on the L200 pickup truck -- sold as the Triton in Japan -- but with a fortified chassis frame, a stately exterior design and a roomy interior with waterproof seats and flooring.
The automaker plans to sell the vehicle later on in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Middle East and Central and South America.
Mitsubishi Motors has found success in the Russian market, selling roughly 100,000 vehicles there in fiscal 2007, with a lineup that includes the Lancer sedan and the Outlander SUV. By expanding its offerings with the Pajero Sport, the company hopes to boost sales in Russia to around 140,000 vehicles in fiscal 2008.
Mitsubishi Motors will use the Moscow International Motor Show opening in late August to publicly debut the Pajero Sport. The new SUV is a strategic global car for the company, and it has prepared a variety of models in order to achieve broad sales in emerging economies.
For the Russian market, Mitsubishi will sell the two-row five-passenger version of the Pajero Sport with a 3.2-liter diesel engine.
