The Nortel wireless mesh solution will use eight core nodes wirelessly connected with a Nortel Wireless Bridge 7230 and 50 Nortel WP7220 and WP7215 Access nodes, covering the major area of the island.
The commissioning, design and installation of the network is being done by a joint venture company Uni Nortel, a collaboration between Nortel and Unisystems, a Greek systems integrator, on behalf of the island's internet service provider 12Net.
12Net was established in the 1990 by Nicholas Negreponte, the co-founder of the MIT Media Lab, the laboratory which contributed to the development of the Nortel Wireless Mesh system. Negreponte has a home on the island.
The wireless network is due to be commissioned this summer, in time for its use by thousands of holiday makers. It will also be used by students and educators returning to school after the summer break.
