The clamshell 3G model, dubbed PEBL, is equipped with an intuitive touch screen and a 2 mega-pixel camera, as well as Bluetooth connectivity. The model was released through SK Telecom Co. (KSE:017670), South Korea's largest wireless operator.
The design for the model, resembling a pebble with a soft purple finish, was first conceptualized in 2003 at Motorola's South Korean design lab, the company's second-largest in the world, and first released outside the country using second-generation WCDMA wireless technology.
Motorola hopes for the model, its second 3G phone released here, will "inspire Korea's sophisticated consumers with its slick design," said Hwang Sung-gul, head of Motorola's design lab in Seoul.
Motorola's South Korean competitors in the 3G handset market are Samsung Electronics Co. (KSE:005930), LG Electronics Inc. (KSE:06657) and Pantech Co (KSE:025930).
