On an adjusted basis, earnings were $3.7 million, or 14 cents a share, compared with $3.76 million, or 14 cents a share, last year.
The mean estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters was a per-share profit of 11 cents.
Revenue for the period ended July 1 rose to $92.2 million from $79.3 million last year. Analysts were looking for revenue of $94.8 million.
Same-restaurant sales rose 0.6% in the quarter, the Huntington Beach, Calif.-based casual dining company said.
BJ's Restaurants also said its 2008 restaurant expansion plan "remains solidly on track."
