The plant supplies Toyota Motor Corp. (TSE:7203) with axles for its Tundra pickup trucks and Sequoia sport utility vehicles. Hino has decided to close the facility for three months through early November in light of Toyota's plans to halt North American assembly lines for those vehicles.
The Arkansas factory's production capacity was increased at the start of this year, enabling it to produce parts for around 300,000 vehicles a year. Although Hino has not announced how much the closure will reduce output, it is expected to be the equivalent of 60,000 to 70,000 vehicles.
The plant's roughly 600 employees will undergo training and other activities during the closure, so no layoffs are planned.
Hino also makes parts for Toyota in California, and that factory will continue to operate as normal.
