State Auto Financial Leads Thursday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Falls 2.63%

OLDWICK, N.J., Jul 25, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- STFC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Thursday, July 24, at 1055.44 (-2.63%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, one rose and 14 declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were State Auto Financial (+8.90%) and QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (+5.44%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were XL Capital (-15.53%) and Aflac Inc. (-11.99%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 1214.40 (-1.65%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Munich Re (+0.71%) and Zurich Financial Services AG (+0.70%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Prudential plc (-6.22%) and Chaucer Holdings (-4.66%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1418.60 (+3.32%). Leading the AMBAP were QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (+5.44%) and Nissay Dowa General Insurance (+5.27%). Trailing the AMBAP were LIG Insurance Co. (-2.13%) and Korean Reinsurance Co. (-1.64%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 1192.66 (-1.31%). Leading the AMBGR were QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (+5.44%) and China Insurance International Holdings (+2.41%). Trailing the AMBGR were XL Capital (-15.53%) and W.R. Berkley Corp. (-5.14%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 1016.12 (-3.22%). Leading the AMBGB were Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (+0.50%) and Benfield Group (-0.59%). Trailing the AMBGB were Aon (-3.70%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (-3.62%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 959.17 (-2.63%). Leading the AMBGML were Atlantic American Corp. (+0.72%) and Zurich Financial Services AG (+0.70%). Trailing the AMBGML were American International Group (-8.87%) and Hartford Financial Services Group (-4.48%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 1064.14 (-3.62%). Leading the AMBGL were Ameriprise Financial (+2.74%) and China Insurance International Holdings (+2.41%). Trailing the AMBGL were Aflac Inc. (-11.99%) and Conseco (-8.99%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 1092.62 (-3.04%). Leading the AMBUPC were State Auto Financial (+8.90%) and Tower Group Inc. (+4.42%). Trailing the AMBUPC were XL Capital (-15.53%) and Fidelity National Financial (-11.71%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 577.17 (-6.10%). Leading the AMBUML were Atlantic American Corp. (+0.72%) and Horace Mann Educators (+0.15%). Trailing the AMBUML were AIG (-8.87%) and Hartford Financial Services Group (-4.48%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 1192.34 (-3.59%). Leading the AMBUL were Ameriprise Financial (+2.74%) and Kansas City Life Insurance (+0.10%). Trailing the AMBUL were Conseco (-8.99%) and Torchmark (-5.94%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 1073.18 (-3.95%). Leading the AMBULH were Ameriprise Financial (+2.74%) and Kansas City Life Insurance (+0.10%). Trailing the AMBULH were Aflac Inc. (-11.99%) and Conseco (-8.99%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 944.60 (-4.43%). Leading the AMBUH were Universal American (-1.10%) and Penn Treaty American (-1.22%). Trailing the AMBUH were Aflac Inc. (-11.99%) and Triple-S Management Corp. (-7.10%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 999.40 (-3.37%). Leading the AMBUB were Willis Group Holdings (-2.17%) and Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (-2.69%). Trailing the AMBUB were Aon (-3.70%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (-3.62%).
