This Virginia-based coffee shop has locations in Portsmouth and Virginia Beach and will expand to the Peninsula area with a location in Williamsburg set to open in the next few months. One other Hampton Roads location is also in the works.
"We already have 35 locations in Virginia," said Amy Stoup, the company's area developer. "We are growing pretty rapidly here."
So why are the Daily Grind Unwind shops doing so well? Stoup attributes the franchises' success to its unique concept.
"In addition to being a true coffee house, we fresh roast the coffee, and we have sandwiches, salads, and paninis," she said. "It's an all day approach. Instead of just serving coffee, we have a full menu."
The company originally launched in 1995 and it has grown to more than 51 locations all over the country. It has been franchising since 2000.
Stoup, who joined the company last year, was so impressed with the company's potential that at the age of 42 she decided to only work part-time as a site administrator for a large development company and become the area developer for Daily Grind Unwind.
Now Stoup oversees development from New Kent to the Outer Banks and serves as the liaison between the company and franchisees. She helps them secure locations and aids with the build-out of their stores.
"I am kind of like their local assistant," she said.
Stoup said she feels Daily Grind Unwind has several things that sets it apart from the typical coffee shop. Each location offers a different atmosphere that reflects the surrounding environment.
"Unlike other shops that are cookie cutter and look the same, the Daily Grind Unwind allows franchisers to add a unique flair to each coffee shop," she said. "Some of our locations even have live music and poetry readings."
Stoup said she hopes to expand the company even more throughout her territory, and she wants to open at least five new locations in the near future.
"We extend the fresh edge approach, our wonderful custom made coffees come in a variety of flavors, and we offer a family specific menu," Stoup said.
"I feel there is a need for this type of atmosphere and environment in the area."
