First American Corp. Leads Thursday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Rises 0.18%

OLDWICK, N.J., Aug 01, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- FMR | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Thursday, July 31, at 1042.04 (+0.18%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, 11 rose and four declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were First American Corp. (+11.50%) and Novae Group plc (+10.00%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were First Mercury Financial Corp. (-9.71%) and Gainsco (-7.08%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 1160.28 (+0.57%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Novae Group plc (+10.00%) and Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (+2.00%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Benfield Group (-2.89%) and Euler Hermes (-2.63%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1377.53 (+0.80%). Leading the AMBAP were Dongbu Insurance Co. (+5.03%) and Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance Co. Ltd. (+3.76%). Trailing the AMBAP were Korean Reinsurance Co. (-2.44%) and QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (-0.96%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 1159.20 (+0.54%). Leading the AMBGR were Aspen Insurance Holdings (+3.97%) and Allied World Assurance (+2.16%). Trailing the AMBGR were Euler Hermes (-2.63%) and Korean Reinsurance Co. (-2.44%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 1043.57 (+1.38%). Leading the AMBGB were Willis Group Holdings (+3.75%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+1.73%). Trailing the AMBGB were Benfield Group (-2.89%) and Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (-1.31%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 1106.01 (+0.23%). Leading the AMBUPC were First American Corp. (+11.50%) and United America Indemnity (+6.19%). Trailing the AMBUPC were First Mercury Financial Corp. (-9.71%) and Gainsco (-7.08%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 566.26 (-1.99%). Leading the AMBUML were Horace Mann Educators (+1.69%) and Unitrin (+0.18%). Trailing the AMBUML were Assurant (-6.82%) and American National Insurance (-3.28%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 1192.35 (-0.98%). Leading the AMBUL were National Western Life Insurance (+4.14%) and Prudential Financial Inc. (+3.43%). Trailing the AMBUL were Sun Life Financial (-5.74%) and Genworth Financial (-4.43%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 1088.74 (+0.07%). Leading the AMBULH were Unum Group (+7.66%) and Penn Treaty American (+6.89%). Trailing the AMBULH were Sun Life Financial (-5.74%) and Genworth Financial (-4.43%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 976.71 (+1.48%). Leading the AMBUH were Unum Group (+7.66%) and Penn Treaty American (+6.89%). Trailing the AMBUH were Triple-S Management Corp. (-3.76%) and WellPoint (-0.87%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 1027.65 (+1.57%). Leading the AMBUB were Willis Group Holdings (+3.75%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+1.73%). Trailing the AMBUB were Brown & Brown (+0.23%) and Aon (+0.93%).
