Together with Aircell, a company specialising in airborne communications for business and commercial aviation, the Mobile Broadband Network service will be installed on Delta's fleet of over 330 mainline aircraft.
Passengers will be able to use Wi-Fi enabled devices such as laptops, smartphones and PDAs to access the Internet, corporate VPNs, corporate and personal e-mail accounts, SMS texting and instant messaging services through the Gogo system. It will cost customers USD9.95 to access Gogo on flights under three hours in length and USD12.95 for flights lasting over three hours.
The service will initially be offered on Delta's 133 MD88/90 aircraft from this autumn. This will then be expanded to the rest of the domestic fleet of over 200 Boeing 737, 757 and 767-300 aircraft in the first half of 2009.
