Special Adviser to Governor Sule Lamido on Solid Mineral Resources, Ali AbdulKadir, who disclosed this in an interview with THISDAY in Dutse, said the government was determined to derive the highest possible economic benefit from the mineral resources with which the state is blessed.
His words, "it is an established fact that Jigawa State has rich and large deposits of viable mineral resources. The only problem we have been having is that there is no concrete documentation of the volumes and economic potential of such deposits and this administration is determined to set records straight."
The SA explained that the state government wants to have factual details on the mineral deposits in the state hence the award of the contract. He noted that the consultants are also to establish correct processes for rights acquisition on behalf of the state government, to enable the government work on concessions when the needs arise.
He expressed optimism that, at the end of the feasibility studies, the state would be in a good position to join other states which enjoy derivation funds as, to him, "mineral resources from Jigawa would begin to earn huge foreign exchange for the country."
Ali explained further that the feasibility studies to cover the entire state are to be concluded in two years, and listed some of the minerals included in the proposed studies to include trona (soda ash) in Babura, Sule-Tankarkar, Maigatari and Birniwa local government areas.
Others are lime and hydrated lime from calcerate in Auyo, Kafin-Hausa and Hadejia; kaolin in Gwaram as well as gold, tin and columbite in Kazaure, Roni, Gwiwa, and Gwaram Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Ali said the consultants would also evaluate the existence and viability of Iron-ore as well as carry out a reconnaissance for hard rocks which are suitable for dimension stone for Granite cutting and polishing industries in Dutse, Birnin Kudu, and Gwaram. The studies are to start within the month and be concluded within two years. When concluded, the studies are expected to jump-start Jigawa State's efforts to turn its economy around.
