CastlePoint Holdings Leads Tuesday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Rises 3.34%

OLDWICK, N.J., Aug 06, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- UTR | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 1071.51 (+3.34%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, 14 rose and one declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were CastlePoint Holdings (+27.93%) and Legal & General Group (+12.11%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Unitrin (-14.42%) and American Physicians Capital (-7.53%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the Asia/Pacific Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The U.S. Insurance Index (AMBUS) closed at 991.18 (+3.54%). Leading the AMBUS were Castlepoint Holdings (+27.93%) and AIG (+11.99%). Trailing the AMBUS were Unitrin (-14.42%) and American Physicians Capital (-7.53%).

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 1201.81 (+4.25%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Legal & General Group (+12.11%) and Brit Insurance Holdings (+9.32%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Paris Re Holdings (-2.50%) and Chaucer Holdings (+0.34%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1284.04 (-2.41%). Leading the AMBAP were QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (+2.70%) and Korean Reinsurance Co. (+2.50%). Trailing the AMBAP were Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (-5.90%) and Sompo Japan Insurance (-5.18%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 1180.78 (+2.02%). Leading the AMBGR were Castlepoint Holdings (+27.93%) and Max Capital Group (+9.65%). Trailing the AMBGR were Paris Re Holdings (-2.50%) and Odyssey Re Holdings (-1.30%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 1069.69 (+3.07%). Leading the AMBGB were Aon (+3.56%) and Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (+3.33%). Trailing the AMBGB were Benfield Group (+0.51%) and Willis Group Holdings (+2.48%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 965.18 (+5.12%). Leading the AMBGML were AIG (+11.99%) and Axa S.A. (+7.28%). Trailing the AMBGML were Unitrin (-14.42%) and Assurant (-0.22%).

The Global Nonlife Insurance Index (AMBGNL) closed at 1145.91 (+0.77%). Leading the AMBGNL were Castlepoint Holdings (+27.93%) and Max Capital Group (+9.65%). Trailing the AMBGNL were American Physicians Capital (-7.53%) and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (-5.90%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 1104.06 (+4.20%). Leading the AMBGL were Legal & General Group (+12.11%) and Principal Financial Group (+10.58%). Trailing the AMBGL were Health Net (-3.07%) and Kansas City Life Insurance (-1.14%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 1126.11 (+1.67%). Leading the AMBUPC were Castlepoint Holdings (+27.93%) and Max Capital Group (+9.65%). Trailing the AMBUPC were American Physicians Capital (-7.53%) and Tower Group Inc. (-4.59%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 617.19 (+7.78%). Leading the AMBUML were AIG (+11.99%) and Hartford Financial Services Group (+7.22%). Trailing the AMBUML were Unitrin (-14.42%) and Assurant (-0.22%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 1217.06 (+3.67%). Leading the AMBUL were Principal Financial Group (+10.58%) and Phoenix Cos. (+9.07%). Trailing the AMBUL were Kansas City Life Insurance (-1.14%) and Independence Holding Co. (-0.55%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 1125.94 (+3.64%). Leading the AMBULH were Principal Financial Group (+10.58%) and Phoenix Cos. (+9.07%). Trailing the AMBULH were Health Net (-3.07%) and Kansas City Life Insurance (-1.14%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 1027.19 (+3.60%). Leading the AMBUH were Universal American (+8.04%) and Triple-S Management Corp. (+6.47%). Trailing the AMBUH were Health Net (-3.07%) and Penn Treaty American (+0.69%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 1054.81 (+3.15%). Leading the AMBUB were Aon (+3.56%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+3.13%). Trailing the AMBUB were Willis Group Holdings (+2.48%) and Brown & Brown (+2.74%).
