The Commission reported that, following an investigation, it found that the merger would not have a negative effect on competition in Europe or in the transatlantic market.
The airlines are still waiting for approval from the US Department of Justice.
Delta announced in April that it planned to merge with Northwest in an all-stock transaction to create a new company that will be named Delta and headquartered in Atlanta. The new airline and its regional partners will serve more than 390 destinations in 67 countries.
