Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings Leads Wednesday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Declines 0.26%

OLDWICK, N.J., Aug 07, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- OLMUY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 1068.76 (-0.26%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, six rose and nine declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (+5.96%) and QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (+5.80%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Old Mutual plc (-11.37%) and Protective Life Corp. (-10.01%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 1203.72 (+0.16%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (+5.66%) and Cattolica Assicurazioni S.p.A. (+4.27%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Old Mutual plc (-11.37%) and Aviva (-2.45%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1312.22 (+2.19%). Leading the AMBAP were Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (+5.96%) and QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (+5.80%). Trailing the AMBAP were Sompo Japan Insurance (-0.30%) and China Insurance International Holdings (0.00%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 1194.23 (+1.14%). Leading the AMBGR were QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (+5.80%) and Scor S.E. (+4.10%). Trailing the AMBGR were Reinsurance Group of America Inc. (-3.00%) and Allied World Assurance (-2.88%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 1123.87 (-0.20%). Leading the AMBUPC were American Safety Insurance Holdings (+4.87%) and CRM Holdings (+4.08%). Trailing the AMBUPC were Amerisafe (-6.50%) and First Mercury Financial Corp. (-4.22%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 606.57 (-1.72%). Leading the AMBUML were HCC Insurance Holdings (+4.69%) and Unitrin (+1.94%). Trailing the AMBUML were Atlantic American Corp. (-7.64%) and American National Insurance (-2.84%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 1207.84 (-0.76%). Leading the AMBUL were National Western Life Insurance (+2.46%) and Conseco (+1.52%). Trailing the AMBUL were Protective Life Corp. (-10.01%) and StanCorp Financial Group (-3.69%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 1113.59 (-1.10%). Leading the AMBULH were National Western Life Insurance (+2.46%) and Penn Treaty American (+2.07%). Trailing the AMBULH were Protective Life Corp. (-10.01%) and StanCorp Financial Group (-3.69%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 1011.52 (-1.53%). Leading the AMBUH were Penn Treaty American (+2.07%) and Cigna (+1.80%). Trailing the AMBUH were Aflac Inc. (-2.26%) and WellPoint (-2.24%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 1066.58 (+1.12%). Leading the AMBUB were Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+2.49%) and Aon (+0.26%). Trailing the AMBUB were Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (-0.16%) and Willis Group Holdings (0.00%).
