Homebuyers in Wisconsin are paying an average of $2,940 in closing costs, according to Bankrate.com, which conducted its closing cost survey in June and July. That compares with $2,508 in the survey last year.
The national average is $3,118, up from $2,736 in last year's survey, Bankrate said.
Wisconsin has the 37th-highest mortgage closing costs in the survey. New York City has the most expensive closing costs, at $4,016. North Carolina has the lowest, at $2,650.
The study was conducted by obtaining four to nine good-faith estimates from the Web sites of online lenders.
Researchers picked a ZIP code in some of the largest cities in each state and requested information on closing costs for a $200,000 loan. They requested fees on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage for a borrower with a 20% down payment and good credit to buy a single-family house. Bankrate's survey includes lenders' origination fees, and not taxes or prepaid items.
