Those interested in emergency preparedness, protecting their homes and learning how to strengthen them and rebuild stronger after the severe storms and flooding June 1 to July 22 will have a chance to learn details from the experts in mitigation andthe National Flood Insurance Program.
FEMA will have a specialist to provide basic information on flood insurance at the Home Depot and Lowe's locations to answer questions about how to buy a policy, where they are available and to dispel any myths about how the National Flood InsuranceProgram works.
Protecting your home and its contents financially, as well as structurally is crucial when the next flood happens. "Having flood insurance for both your home and belongings can give you peace of mind," said FEMA Deputy Federal CoordinatingOfficer Mark Landry. "Insurance is always the first line of defense in any disaster and I urge everyone to purchase flood insurance. It can cover flood damage not covered by homeowners insurance."
In addition to rebuilding advice, the FEMA Mitigation Advisors will have information about emergency preparedness to protect you, your family and home from flooding, and other types of natural disasters.
"Not only is it important to know how to rebuild stronger after a disaster, it's just as important to have an emergency preparedness plan for the next one," said FEMA Community Outreach Supervisor Luletha Cheatham. "Having a plan andpracticing it regularly is the best way to ensure your family's safety when a disaster or emergency happens."
FEMA Mitigation Advisors will also have a weather alert radio from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to demonstrate how it works and how it can save your life and your family's life. They will also have information on where topurchase a NOAA weather radio.
