Previously, storage for Amazon EC2 was linked to the instance, meaning that when this was terminated the data within was lost. The Amazon EBS allows users to choose to allocate storage volumes that persist independently from the instances of Amazon EC2.
Amazon EBS also enables users to create point-in-time, consistent snapshots of volumes that can then be stored in the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3).
Amazon EC2 and Amazon EBS can be accessed by visiting http://aws.amazon.com/ec2.
