Old Mutual plc Leads Wednesday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Declines 0.52%

OLDWICK, N.J., Aug 21, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- OLMUY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 1007.75 (+0.52%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, 12 rose and three declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were Old Mutual plc (+5.07%) and CRM Holdings (+3.41%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were First Acceptance Corp. (-6.08%) and American Safety Insurance Holdings (-3.24%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Health and HMO Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 1099.25 (+1.11%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Old Mutual plc (+5.07%) and RSA Insurance Group plc (+2.81%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Paris Re Holdings (-0.99%) and Mapfre S.A. (-0.96%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1240.74 (-0.06%). Leading the AMBAP were QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (+1.27%) and Korean Reinsurance Co. (+0.85%). Trailing the AMBAP were Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (-2.99%) and Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance (-1.33%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 1132.63 (+0.43%). Leading the AMBGR were Chaucer Holdings (+2.03%) and Allied World Assurance (+2.00%). Trailing the AMBGR were Argo Group International Holdings (-1.91%) and Reinsurance Group of America Inc. (-1.12%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 1121.38 (+1.67%). Leading the AMBGB were Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+3.25%) and Willis Group Holdings (+1.85%). Trailing the AMBGB were Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (-0.39%) and Aon (+0.21%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 856.98 (+1.15%). Leading the AMBGML were RSA Insurance Group plc (+2.81%) and AIG (+2.36%). Trailing the AMBGML were First Acceptance Corp. (-6.08%) and Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (-0.14%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 1042.00 (+0.36%). Leading the AMBGL were Old Mutual plc (+5.07%) and National Western Life Insurance (+2.43%). Trailing the AMBGL were Penn Treaty American (-2.65%) and UnitedHealth Group (-2.36%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 1104.03 (+0.02%). Leading the AMBUPC were CRM Holdings (+3.41%) and Meadowbrook Insurance Group (+2.48%). Trailing the AMBUPC were First Acceptance Corp. (-6.08%) and American Safety Insurance Holdings (-3.24%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 502.04 (+1.32%). Leading the AMBUML were American International Group (+2.36%) and Unitrin (+1.40%). Trailing the AMBUML were Horace Mann Educators (-0.14%) and Atlantic American Corp. (0.00%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 1170.38 (+0.84%). Leading the AMBUL were National Western Life Insurance (+2.43%) and Phoenix Cos. (+1.85%). Trailing the AMBUL were Principal Financial Group (-1.58%) and Conseco (-1.35%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 1092.91 (-0.07%). Leading the AMBULH were National Western Life Insurance (+2.43%) and Phoenix Cos. (+1.85%). Trailing the AMBULH were Penn Treaty American (-2.65%) and UnitedHealth Group (-2.36%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 1008.79 (-1.17%). Leading the AMBUH were Triple-S Management Corp. (+1.24%) and Universal American (+0.83%). Trailing the AMBUH were Penn Treaty American (-2.65%) and UnitedHealth Group (-2.36%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 1107.36 (+1.77%). Leading the AMBUB were Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+3.25%) and Willis Group Holdings (+1.85%). Trailing the AMBUB were Aon (+0.21%) and Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (+0.43%).
