Harley mania breaks out next week, with Harley-Davidson's 105th anniversary celebration Wednesday through Aug. 31, and bars, restaurants and cafes through the area are gearing up for it. One of them is Divino Gelato Cafe in downtown Waukesha.
Owner Lori Lester has been developing special flavors for the past several weeks, in anticipation of the tens of thousands of riders expected to descend on downtown Waukesha. One of the nine street parties celebrating the Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer will take place there.
Her husband, Joe, said that because one of the event's sponsors is Miller Brewing Co., Miller beer flavors were a must. Other gelato flavors will include Old-Fashioned, made with Jim Beam, a sponsoring partner in the Waukesha celebration; mojito; and peach champagne.
"We always have some alcoholic flavors, but not nearly as many as we're going to have for Harley fest," Joe Lester said.
And for those Harley fans in search of gelato with a little less spirit, shall we say, there's black licorice and orange vanilla -- Harley colors.
Divino is at 227 W. Main St. in Waukesha; telephone (262) 446-9490, and on the Web at www.divinogelatocafe.com. A second location, which opened about a month ago, is at N20-W22951 Watertown Road in Pewaukee.
Local foods
A new venture is trying to simplify the connection between local farmers and restaurants.
Braise Culinary School was one of seven organizations to receive the first Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin state grants. It was awarded $25,502, according to the state.
Braise is launching "restaurant supported agriculture," based on the community supported agriculture model. Its aim is to make it easier for restaurants to buy their ingredients from local farmers.
Meritage and La Merenda in Milwaukee and Cafe Manna in Brookfield are participating in the new program, as are eight area farms.
New menu
On the shores of Delevan Lake, Lake Lawn Resort has renovated its Lookout Terrace Grill and updated the menu, too.
The inside and outside dining areas have been expanded, and three dozen new items are on the menu, including a walleye fish sandwich ($9.50). Appetizers, soups, salads, small pizzas and desserts also are served. For more information, www.lakelawnresort.com or (800) 338-5253.
