Aug 22, 2008 (The Buffalo News - McClatchy-Tribune News Service via COMTEX) -- TOMA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Aug. 22--Tops Markets has begun hiring for 40 accounting jobs as it continues to rebuild employment at its Amherst headquarters.

The supermarket chain was sold last year by Royal Ahold, which had previously shifted a large number of Tops' corporate jobs to Carlisle, Pa., home of another chain that Ahold continues to own.

Since Morgan Stanley Private Equity completed its purchase of Tops late last year, the chain has started bringing positions back to Buffalo Niagara. Earlier this year, Tops outlined plans for 140 new jobs in Amherst, in addition to 145 existing jobs that it would retain.

The chain since the start of this year has hired people for 60 of those 140 new jobs, mostly in sales and marketing.

The hiring for the accounting positions, ranging from staff accountants and clerks to analysts and supervisors, is just getting started, said Kristine Wydro, Tops' director of human resources. Tops intends to have all of the new employees in place by Nov. 1.

Wydro said it makes things easier to have operations and decision-making centralized in Buffalo Niagara. "We know our business here," she said. The accounting positions will be at either the 6363 Main St. headquarters or in additional space near those offices.

Beyond the accounting jobs and other new jobs already filled, Tops will still have about 40 positions to fill. Tops expects to finish hiring for all of its new positions by the end of the year.

Tops has been taking steps to restore a local focus to the homegrown supermarket chain. Under Ahold, Tops maintained corporate offices in Amherst, but in the final few years of Ahold's ownership, the chain was led by a chief executive officer who held the same duties for the Giant of Carlisle, Pa. chain. Tops once again has its own CEO, Frank Curci, under Morgan Stanley Private Equity's ownership.
