CNA Surety Leads Thursday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Declines 0.67%

OLDWICK, N.J., Aug 22, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- PTA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Thursday, Aug. 21, at 1001.04 (-0.67%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, three rose and 12 declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were CNA Surety (+2.82%) and Paris Re Holdings (+2.73%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Penn Treaty American (-39.58%) and American International Group (-4.90%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 1089.04 (-0.93%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Paris Re Holdings (+2.73%) and Hiscox (+2.26%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Aviva (-4.50%) and Amlin plc (-3.90%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1233.09 (-0.62%). Leading the AMBAP were Tower Ltd. (+0.43%) and Singapore Reinsurance Corp. (0.00%). Trailing the AMBAP were Dongbu Insurance Co. (-2.79%) and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (-2.77%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 1123.49 (-0.81%). Leading the AMBGR were Paris Re Holdings (+2.73%) and White Mountains Insurance Group (+2.53%). Trailing the AMBGR were Amlin plc (-3.90%) and ING Groep N.V. (-2.75%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 1118.37 (-0.27%). Leading the AMBGB were Willis Group Holdings (+2.00%) and Benfield Group (+0.65%). Trailing the AMBGB were Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (-1.63%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (-1.17%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 846.57 (-1.22%). Leading the AMBGML were RSA Insurance Group plc (+0.70%) and Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (+0.11%). Trailing the AMBGML were AIG (-4.90%) and First Acceptance Corp. (-3.53%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 1095.45 (-0.78%). Leading the AMBUPC were CNA Surety (+2.82%) and White Mountains Insurance Group (+2.53%). Trailing the AMBUPC were American Physicians Capital (-4.15%) and First Acceptance Corp. (-3.53%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 487.69 (-2.86%). Leading the AMBUML were Atlantic American Corp. (0.00%) and Delphi Financial Group (0.00%). Trailing the AMBUML were AIG (-4.90%) and American Financial Group (-2.52%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 1172.30 (+0.16%). Leading the AMBUL were Sun Life Financial (+2.01%) and Independence Holding Co. (+1.01%). Trailing the AMBUL were Presidential Life Corp. (-3.66%) and American Equity Inv. Life (-3.09%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 1096.85 (+0.36%). Leading the AMBULH were Aetna (+2.30%) and Sun Life Financial (+2.01%). Trailing the AMBULH were Penn Treaty American (-39.58%) and Presidential Life Corp. (-3.66%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 1014.86 (+0.60%). Leading the AMBUH were Aetna (+2.30%) and Humana (+1.33%). Trailing the AMBUH were Penn Treaty American (-39.58%) and Universal American (-1.64%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 1104.10 (-0.29%). Leading the AMBUB were Willis Group Holdings (+2.00%) and Brown & Brown (+0.62%). Trailing the AMBUB were Marsh & McLennan Cos. (-1.17%) and Aon (-0.19%).
