But you won't feel at home if you don't speak the lingo. If you're new to Harley-Davidson culture and you don't want to stick out like a busted piston, you need to know biker buzzwords.
Here are some terms to get you through your first rally.
Ape hanger: An elevated handlebar set high above the rider's shoulders.
Bagger: A large touring bike that carries a lot of accessories.
Bar & shield: The Harley-Davidson logo.
Bobber: A minimalist 1940s-style bike.
Burn-out: When the front brake is held while full power is applied to the rear wheel, burning rubber.
Chopper: Custom bike that usually comes with lots of 'tude and often includes extended frames and no suspension. Technically, a modified frame or hand-built bike.
DOT: U.S. Department of Transportation. Often used to refer to DOT standards for helmets.
Dry weight: A cycle's weight without fuel, riders or cargo.
Hardtail: An H-D motorcycle frame without a rear suspension.
H.O.G: Harley Owners Group, spanning the globe, with chapters that promote rides for charity events, entertainment and outreach.
Iron butt: Motorcyclist who rides a lot of miles.
Jiffy stand: A motorcycle kick stand; like the one you had on your bike as a kid, only able to support a lot more weight.
Saddle bag: Luggage that hangs from either side of a bike's rear fender. Also known as a pannier.
Sissy bar: The backrest for a motorcycle passenger. Sometimes highly ornate.
Skull cap: The tight-fitting cap bikers like to wear to cut down wind resistance.
Softail: An H-D motorcycle frame with a hidden rear suspension. A Softail offers more comfort than a Hardtail.
Tricked out: A motorcycle with a lot of added accessories and detailing.
Twisties: Curvy roads beloved of bikers.
V-Twin: An engine with two cylinders that meet in a V-shape. All current Harley motorcycles have one.
Willie G.: Willie G. Davidson (right), the legendary cycle designer and grandson of company founder William A. Davidson.
