FedEx could start sending test packages through the layers of conveyors in its main building in the next 30 to 60 days, said Mickie Elmore, PTIA director of development, during the monthly meeting of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority Tuesday.
FedEx is about 30 to 60 days ahead of schedule on development of the hub operation, said PTIA Executive Director Ted Johnson.
Construction is almost finished on the network of eight buildings that will make up the hub complex, Johnson said.
FedEx has pledged to create 1,500 full -- and part-time jobs when its latest national cargo hub is fully operational. The $300 million overnight package facility will cover 1 million square feet, and the complex will be capable of sorting up to 24,000 packages per hour.
The Memphis, Tenn.-based shipping and logistics conglomerate announced in April 1998 that it picked PTIA for its mid-Atlantic cargo hub. The Triad won a recruiting battle against five other airports in the Carolinas.
Federal, state and local agencies spent five-and-a-half years performing environmental and regulatory reviews of the project before work began at the hub site and on the expansion of the airport. PTIA is adding a parallel runway and taxiways to accommodate the hub operation.
