The e-mails inform customers that the delivery company was not able to deliver a package and requests the customer to print out an attached invoice. However, the attachment is not an invoice but a trojan which BitDefender has identified as Trojan.Spy.ZBot, or one of its many variants.
The malware installs itself in a rootkit-hidden system directory and is engineered to steal sensitive e-banking data by injecting routines into winlogon.exe and iexplorer.exe. The trojan can also deactivate the firewall, download supplemental components and allow remote access to the compromised system.
The company recommends all computer users install and activate a reliable antimalware, firewall and spam filter solution.
