Paul Scherer, a union carpenter from Decatur, stepped up to pick up his free $18,500 V-Rod special edition Tuesday night at the Coziahr Harley-Davidson dealership in Forsyth. He won the bike in a drawing staged by Miller Lite, and a cheering crowd saw the gleaming machine, finished in Miller corporate blue, presented to Scherer, who couldn't stop smiling.
"I've got a motorcycle license, but it's been 15 years since I've been on the road on one," said Scherer, 49. "I'm going to have to learn how to operate it; it's supposed to be the fastest Harley they make."
And for the men and women who do the making, this is Harley's 105th anniversary year, and it was acknowledged with a party at Coziahr, featuring live music, food and the Miller Lite girls giving away all kinds of prizes.
Among the special guests was an entourage of riders who came up from Fort Myers, Fla., part of 105 convoys converging from across the nation for a four-day anniversary bash to be hosted this week at Harley's Milwaukee, Wis., headquarters.
Debbie Coziahr, who owns the Forsyth dealership with her husband, Tim, said this could be the biggest event in Harley history. "They've exceeded ticket sales for the 100th anniversary, and they had 355,000 people there for that one," she said. "They have sold tickets to literally every country in this world."
The guest riders from Florida numbered several Harley-Davidson corporate types, including Executive Vice President William Dannehl. He said his company, which has hired Bruce Springsteen to headline the anniversary entertainment in Milwaukee, likes to reach out and do something special for its customers.
"Riding a Harley is a lifestyle," he said. "It's an opportunity to have a part of your life be a little bit mystical."
And as for that union carpenter who got his high-power dose of mysticism for free, he'll long have reason to cherish and remember Harley's anniversary celebrations: Not only did Scherer win the bike, but 11 months earlier, he won $150,000 in the Little Lotto.
